Editorial judgment

I woke up this morning at like 3 AM, drunk as a lord and in the mood to post some "Ooh I'm done with college!"-type thoughts on FLOG. Somehow, though, I did the sensible thing and wrote them down without publishing them. So now I can parse through them and give you the good bits out of their maudlin context. Enjoy:

  • "When one reaches a point in life where it's appropriate to reflect . . . is it necessary to have 'Salisbury Hill' repeating over and over in your head? All "heart going boom boom boom" and such like about some giant eagle guiding Peter Gabriel to his destiny? Because I'd rather not. I would rather have 'Shock the Monkey' or 'Sledgehammer.'"
  • "I figure that, at current rates, by the time I croak I will have had like 10 cats and 8 dogs."
  • "My dogs . . . both seem to have settled into a fully rewarding existence based on bones, bacon, homosexuality, and the occasional swim."
  • "70 mph now feels slow to me; I'm happiest at 85 or 90. I can remember a time when 70 was thrilling, but it seems so long ago."

. . . And that's really all I'd care to share with you. I'm glad we had this talk.

You've got gay dogs? Has this been mentioned on FLOG™ before? Is Zuma going to have his own coming-out post in the near future?

Posted by: WWB at May 6, 2006 11:52 AM

WWB: Zuma and Pepper's relationship has been whispered about for years now. Dan would know but I'm pretty sure they're still calling themselves "roommates."

Flog: 'Salisbury Hill' is better than "Welcome to the Jungle," which is what I usually have running through my head during moments like that. Nice chat, son. Now you go get washed up for supper.

Last October, Blender listed "Sweet Child O' Mine" as the 3rd best song "since you were born," with "Billie Jean" and "B.O.B" coming ahead of it and U2's "One" ranked immediatley after. I find that hard to disagree with, even though I might quibble with Michael Jackson landing so high up.

Posted by: WWB at May 10, 2006 8:26 PM

Blender? Yeah, they totally know everything about good music. I'm certain Zuma and Pepper will agree: clearly, the greatest rock song to appear since any of our births is this one here.

I don't know about the top three but I would put "Billie Jean" in the top ten.

And "B.O.B." does not deserve to be anywhere near the apex of that list. It's not even Outkast's best track. Same deal with "One." It's no "Where the Streets Have No Name" or "Sunday, Bloody Sunday." I'd even put it behind "The Wanderer," that toss off Johnny Cash track at the end of Zooropa.

The gauntlet has been thrown down. I wonder if anyone will take up this challenge.

Posted by: Brandon at May 11, 2006 11:26 PM

Brandon: What challenge?

WWB: Obviously you haven't been around my dogs enough. I'll put it this way: they go up to Portland and get together with two other dogs, one male and one female. Out of this foursome, one dog is not getting humped.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Posted by: FLOG at May 13, 2006 12:08 AM

I insulted Outkast and U2. I guess I expected someone to defend them. How wrong I was.

Posted by: Brandon at May 16, 2006 11:29 PM

How dare you insult my two favorite bands you piece of old in-between toe jelly. Why, [insert Outkast bend members here] are so talented that they can actually sing. And their song lyrics touch deeply at the heartstrings of America. Meanwhile, that Bono and [insert rest of U2 here] have more talent in their Joshua Tree than you have in your

Oh, fuck it. I don't even know who Outkast is. Now, insult Anna Moffo or Lucia Popp and you'll have a battle on your hands.

Posted by: Kenny at May 17, 2006 2:08 PM

You probably consider Lucia Popp an accomplished coloratura soprano and lieder singer. Puhleaze. They should have never let her out of the Bratislava Academy!

Oh, Google Search.

Posted by: Kenny at May 18, 2006 11:33 AM

I forgot all about this until just now.

Brandon, you know how these things work -- these lists are usually more about the artists than the songs themselves. I note that you didn't actually dispute the particular bands' deserving to be ranked so high. They all put out some great pop tunes, and they've gotta go with just one.

Also, they want us to be arguing about it. And look how you've fallen into their trap.

Posted by: WWB at May 23, 2006 7:44 PM

WWB: Suckered by Blender. What a fool I've been.

Kenny: It was a bio on All Music, actually.

Posted by: Brandon at May 23, 2006 10:46 PM

Guess what? I AM DURNK!

Posted by: Brandon at June 25, 2006 1:33 AM

Where art thou Flog? Pick up your phone!

Posted by: Kenny at August 19, 2006 11:05 AM
